The Calls List

This section provides a contact manager that allows you to track planned, incoming and outgoing calls. You are provided with the ability to log all calls with date, time, duration, company, number and notes for each call and then display the records by individual, status, company, date or category. This section is tied to the Address Book section in the ability to retrieve information from the Address Book and transfer the required information into the call record. You can create follow-up call records and carry forward uncompleted calls automatically. With a modem attached to the phone line, you can dial or re-dial right from the Calls List.

The Planner

The Planner is a long-range planning tool that allow you to block off your time in your Calendar by the year or by the quarter. You can define up to 15 different event types for scheduling. This section of Organizer is not for the one time events such as appointments or meetings but rather for long term planning such as projects, vacations, conferences, etc. You can change the duration of a event and move the events by drag and drop.

The Notepad

This section provides an organized method of storing typed in free-form notes, imported numeric, text or graphics files. A table of contents page is automatically updated and provides one click access to each and every page.

The Anniversary List

The Anniversary section does more that give you a place to list all birthdays and anniversaries, it allows to you make one entry for recurring events including those items that have variable dates such as certain holidays. An alarm can be set for these entries if you need a reminder. The list can be displayed by year, month, category or even zodiac sign.

These sections can be printed in a number of formats including in formats that will fit in to binder form day planners if you wish to have a printed form that you can carry with you while you are away from you computer.

Organizer has the ability to synchronize with Organizer stored on another computer through a LAN or with some makes of electronic organizer such as those made by Sharp.

Organizer can be shared in full or in part with colleagues over a LAN in which case all entries made, no matter who makes them, are updated on all copies (synchronized). This allows others to share in team projects and avoid duplication or conflicts. The individual user can determine how much or how little will be shared.

Organizer is highly customizable by the individual user. It can have information found in various section of Organizer linked to allow you to jump from one section to the related part of another section with a click. Colours can be changed, tabs customized, sections added or removed. The smart icons can be customized based on the needs and preferences of the user.

Changes from Earlier Versions

Since version 1.1, the changes were to default the browser to Netscape Navigator which is true for all SmartSuite Applications, providing the documented ability to play .WAV files of your choosing to serve as alarms and to fix a number of problems reported by users including file corruption and the loss of accented characters.

Summary

The Organizer application component of the Lotus SmartSuite for OS/2 Warp is a very useful personal planner for any individual who needs to keep track of the events of their lives. The key strength of Organizer is its customizablity which allows the individual to personalize each component and the entire organizer to meet specific needs. This ability to customize is missing in many day planners. Time management is the key to making the best use of your limited time and Organizer is an excellent solution to assisting you to manage your time. Naturally, the efficiency of this time manager or any other time manager is based on whether the individual chooses to make use of the system provided. I have found Organizer to be relatively easy to use and quick to learn. I do not use all sections provided in the Organizer as some of them do not fit my personal needs. This being said, the sections that I do use have been very useful to me.
