WarpDoctor - General Meeting for 2004-06-27

12:07:54 -> [ ... meeting ... session ... ]
<WalterOS2> Let's begin the meeting.
<WalterOS2> This session of Warpdoctor is now in session.
<WalterOS2> You can find the agenda at: http://www.warpdoctor.org/agendas/warpdoc_2004-06-27.html
<WalterOS2> Item A1: Plug-in status
<WalterOS2> Doug: Would you bring us up-to-date?
<Doug> we are ready to start inputing data
<Doug> All the structure of the site is in place, except for shadowing
<Doug> There will be bugs, and there is stuff yet to complete, but all the input screens are there
<Doug> Is that verbose enough?
<Doug> I can give you the locations of some different types of data/screens in the site if you want to see what the data and screens look like
<WalterOS2> Go ahead
<KenKrchnr> What is the newest plugin version?
<Doug> Documentation/publications - example in Documents - IBM Redbooks
<Doug> The latest version is 2.14. There is a link for it on the home page.
<Doug> The download file is wdPlugin.wpi
<Doug> (which is a different download name than we have been using in the past)
<Doug> Applications, which is basically any software that needs to be downloaded (utilities, etc.)
<Doug> There are a couple of examples in Download - Software - System Utilities, and File Managers
<Doug> The IRC meetings are in WarpDoctor Projects - Web Site - IRC Meetings, although when I tried to put in today's schedule I noticed an error when I clicked on Save
<Doug> Bugs are in the Bugs folder
<Doug> HCL example is in HardWare - Video - Matrox
<Doug> Drivers example is Download - Drivers - Video - Matrox
<WalterOS2> Hi Gord
<Doug> You can see the relationship betwen HCL and Drivers by looking at those two items
<Doug> Links (to other sites) - example is in Links - On Line Magazines
<WalterOS2> Doug: I checked that the plugin was installed, and then selected it.
<WalterOS2> Weirdness then ensued. :-)
<Gord> Hi
<WarpedOS2> Hi all
<Doug> SCL (software compatibility) is in Software - Desktop publishing
<wdl> Hi Gord...
<Doug> Hi Gord, WarpedOS2
<Gord> Hi wdl
<Gord> Hi warpedos2
<Doug> Walter - did you install the latest version?
<Doug> Oops - I would suggest that you guys deinstall the existing plug-in before you install the new version.
<Doug> THere are some configuration files that need to be overwritten, and normally that won't happen if you just upgrade.
<WalterOS2> :-)
<Kris> Doug: how do we now we do not have to latest version?
<WalterOS2> Doug: Dumb question-where is the latest version?
<Doug> Either follow the link on the home page, or ftp://www2.warpdoctor.org/wdplugin.wpi
<Kris> Doug: the latest version is that 2.13?
<Doug> No - 2.14
<Kris> grr....
<WalterOS2> I have version v 2.13
<WarpedOS2> I have v 2.13 as well
<Kris> can we download just the dll-file perhapsS
<Doug> I put up 2.14 last week.
<WarpedOS2> can I install overtop of v.2.13
<Doug> Better to uninstall old version first. You can do that from the warpin icon
<WarpedOS2> k... will do
<Doug> Kris - you could do with just the DLL, as long as you deinstalled v 2.13, reinstalled v 2.13 and then replaced the dll with the latest version
<Doug> WarpedOS2 - you cannot use Mozilla v 1.16, or Firefox v 0.8 with the plug-in
<WalterOS2> Doug: Though Rexx Plugin is installed, it is not listed in WarpIn.
<WalterOS2> Database is not maintained over reinstall or reinstall of WarpIn.
<WalterOS2> Is it sufficient to delete the plugins\*.dll file?
<Doug> If you can't find any mention of the plug-in in the WarpIn database, then
<WarpedOS2> hmmm do I have to reboot for it to work?
<Doug> 1) delete npwrpdoc.dll from your browser's plug-in directory
<Doug> No - don't have to reboot, but you may have to restart the browser
<WarpedOS2> hmmm Doug I did that and it didn't work
<WarpedOS2> I will uninstall it and try it again
<Kris> Doug: how can we extract the dll file out of the wpi file?
<Doug> 2) delete the directory where you installed the warpdoctor plug-in other files.
<Kris> Walter: it just doesn't work, at me too.
<Doug> Kris - if you need just the dll I will upload that, just a second.
<WarpedOS2> do you I need to copy a plugin somewheres?
<Doug> ok ftp://www2.warpdoctor.org/npwrpdoc.dll - it is about 289K
<Doug> ok - lets take you guys one at a time,
<Doug> WarpedOs2 first
<WarpedOS2> I am listening :-)
<Doug> Vaughn - did you download v 2.14 and run the warpin installer
<Doug> ?
<WarpedOS2> yes...but I first uninstalled 2.13
<Doug> Do you have an icon on your desktop for Warpdoctor
<Doug> ?
<WarpedOS2> yes I do
<Doug> Is the file npwrpdoc.dll in the plugins directory for your browser?
<WarpedOS2> no
<Doug> Ah - which type and version of browser are you using?
<WarpedOS2> either mozilla 1.7 or Firefox...either one shows the plugin in there
<WarpedOS2> neither one show I mean
<Kris> Guys, on top of the plugin problem I'm always kicked out
<WalterOS2> It's working properly now.
<Doug> ok - the easiest way to get the dll in the plugins directory is to rerun the warpin install routine, and on the second page, scroll to the bottom and pick PLUGIN FOR USER SPECIFIED BROWSER
<WarpedOS2> ok...hang on
<Doug> When you select that option/package, you can specify the directory where the DLL is to go
<WalterOS2> I have IBM Web Browser 2.0.3 installed.
<Doug> This option is for those installations where the install program can't figure out the proper location to put the *.DLL
<WalterOS2> Doug: I used the IBM Web Browser selection and it worked great. Nice work.
<WalterOS2> Hello MikeG
<Doug> Walter - it has been a while since I tested with IBM web browser, but it should work
<WarpedOS2> Ok..Doug...it is in there now...thanks...
<MikeG> How is everyone..
<WarpedOS2> Hi MikeG
<Doug> If I remember, Kris has a non-standard location he has specified for his plugins directory, since he is sharing those plugins between multiple browsers
<WarpedOS2> Doug, I am doing the same...sharing a plugins directory
<Doug> OK - that will work ok, but the install routine doesn't find that directory correctly
<WarpedOS2> it works just fine for me though, and am also using Shockwave flash 7 for eCS too and it works great too
<Doug> Good.
<WalterOS2> Doug: Who's done the inputting so far?
<Doug> So far just me.
<WalterOS2> OK, it's probably time for some others to get involved.
<Doug> I think we are at the point now.
<Doug> that
<WalterOS2> Gord and wdl originally volunteered but they may be too busy with VOICE stuff.<g>
<WalterOS2> I can do some myself.
<Doug> I will continue to do some input for now, in order to find bugs
<Gord> I MAY have some time.
<Gord> VOICE stuff is coming under control.
<WalterOS2> That's good to hear. :-)
<Gord> ... assuming I've picked up ALL the loose ends.
<WalterOS2> Doug: How much of this application uses DB2?
<Doug> All of the HTML/text data is in DB2. The files (drivers, applications, documents) can be stored either in DB2 or on disk
<WalterOS2> OK, thanks
<Doug> Walter 0 if you are logged on, and using the plug-in, we can look at an example
<WalterOS2> I am.
<Doug> Ok - click on the HOME icon in the folder list, this should briing up the home page on the right.
<WalterOS2> Both. :-)
<Doug> Then click on the 6th icon from the left - the Folder HTML icon.
<WalterOS2> OK, I'm there.
<Doug> That should open up the edit screen for editing folder HTML.
<Doug> Tell me when you get that.
<WalterOS2> I can't find a folder by that name. :-(
<Doug> If you are viewing the home page, the Edit Folder HTML icon is in the toolbar, at the top of the browser window
<Doug> That icon is the 6th from the left, it looks like a folder with a piece of paper sticking out and a pencil
<Doug> The folder icon is a slightly different color than the two folders to its left.
<Doug> Of try this - right click on the HOME icon in the folder list, and select Folder HTML from the pop-up menu
<Doug> Then select Edit/Add - that will get you the same Edit screen.
<WalterOS2> Found it. Turns out I wasn't logged on. :-(
<Doug> ok - sorry
<WalterOS2> Why are you sorry? :-)
<WalterOS2> I'm on the Edit screen.
<Doug> When you click on the Folder HTML icon (6th from the left), it will open an edit screen that contains the HTML that appears in the HOME page.
<Doug> That HTML comes from the database.
<KenKrchnr> So if I change the html does that change the home page for everybody?
<Doug> At the bottom of the edit screen is a check box that says Image List. If you click that it will bring up a screen/list of all the images used in that page.
<Doug> YES - if you change the text here, everyone will see it.
<WalterOS2> You mean the date and all the numbers?
<Doug> Yep - everything
<Doug> Try changing something on the screen, then click Refresh
<WalterOS2> I'm afraid to. <g>
<Doug> You will see the changes immediately. Everyone else will see the changes the next time they view the ome page.
<Doug> GO ahead - we have a backup.
<KenKrchnr> I just did :-)
<Doug> The SAVE button saves the changes back into the database. The Refresh button saves the changes and then redisplays the page that you are editing, if it is visible.
<Doug> The page you are changing might not be visible in your browser because you can do to some other page while you are editing another page.
<WalterOS2> I removed the Coloron logo (sorry Ken) and it worked.
<Doug> do=go to
<Doug> At add the log back in:
<KenKrchnr> Walter, I did the same thing :-)
<Doug> 1) click on the Image List check box to open the list of images.
<Doug> 2) drag the ColorOn entry and drop it on the HTML text area of the edit screen
<Doug> 3) put you cursor in the HTML text where you want the icon to appear, and paste it in there
<Doug> To put images in HTML you have to:
<Doug> 1) add the image to the database.
<Doug> 2) put the reference to the image into the HTML text.
<WalterOS2> I don't understand. "At add the log back in:"
<Doug> Should be: to add the logo back in
<Doug> To put the coloron logo back on the page.
<WalterOS2> I'm afraid I deleted the ColorOn logo from the image list. :-(
<Doug> Thats ok, hang on a minute and I will put it back in.
<KenKrchnr> We don't need that in there anyway.
<Doug> Yes we DO!!!
<Doug> Ok I added the image back to the database. Walter - right click on the image list and select Refresh screen
<Doug> You should see the Coloron image appear in the list.
<Doug> Now you can drag the image from the list and drop it on the HTML - it doesn't matter where
<Doug> Then put your cursor in the html where you want the image to appear and paste (ctrl-insert)
<Doug> That should add the reference to the image into the HTML text.
<Doug> Then click the Refresh button - it should reappear
<Doug> When you get done, lets look at another folder.
<WalterOS2> I got a (error?) message from DrRexx. I must have done something wrong.
<Doug> No - let me try. I was changing lots of stuff late last night and I might have broken some things
<Doug> Opps - that is some debugging stuff that I forgot to take out. You can size that window really small and ignore it it you want.
<WalterOS2> OK-sized.
<Doug> ok - I just put the logo back.
<KenKrchnr> Requests to view irc logs return a sql error message with FF09, anybody else get something different?
<Doug> Oops - I see a database error when it tries to get the log info. I'll look at that after the meeting.
<Doug> I fyou want - go to Download - Drivers - Graphic Tablets.
<WalterOS2> OK, Ken's logo is back.
<WalterOS2> Doug: Might I suggest that on some of those windows like Images and Edit you add a "Cancel" button.
<WalterOS2> Hello TaB
<TaB> Hello!
<KenKrchnr> Doug, I can see how to edit the page, but how do you edit the title? (ie - 2003 WarpDoctir Meetings)
<Doug> I will try. You can cancel now by simply closing the window, but a cancel button would be more explicit
<Doug> If the edit screen was working (and it is not for meetings) you could do it from the edit screen.
<Doug> You can also direct edit the title (alt-click on the title) and type a new title.
<WalterOS2> When I make a mistake--which unfortunately is all too often--it gives me a great feeling to be able to hit "Cancel".
<WalterOS2> Hello Hawklord
<Doug> Oops - I see a design error on my part. The title that appears in the Meetings folder (and this is the only folder where that happens) is a combination of the title and the meeting date
<Doug> When you direct edit the title in this folder it adds the date to the title. Another bug I will have to look at.
<Doug> But in the other folders, you can alt-click on the title and change it.
<Hawklord> Hello!
<Doug> Hello Hawklord
<WarpedOS2> Hi Hawklord
<Doug> Where was I .... oh - lets look at Download - Drivers - Graphics Tablets
<Doug> The top part of what is displayed in the right window is folder html. A folder may or may not have folder HTML.
<Doug> The two items below that are content items, in this cause drivers
<Doug> Each content item is identified by a different icon.
<Doug> The folder properties determines which content type(s) a folder can store.
<Doug> If you click on the 5th icon from the left in the toolbar, you will open a screen that displays the folder's properties.
<Doug> The ContentType property (in this case D) determines which content type(s) that folder will store.
<Doug> Some folders, like the HOME folder, don't store any content types - it only has folder html.
<Gord> Ummm ... silly question, but are we looking at www2.warpdoctor.org/cgi-bin/WarpDoc_menu.exe ?
<Doug> yes - you have to be logged in though to see the properties screen and the editing icons in the toolbar.
<Doug> Is everyone with me so far?
<KenKrchnr> Yep
<Doug> Ok - you can add a new content item to a folder by displaying the folder in the right window, and then clicking on the folded paper with a plus icon, right next to the google icon
<Doug> You can edit an existing item by:
<Doug> 1) right clicking on the item in the right window and selecting Edit from the pop-up menu
<Doug> or 2) displaying the item in the right window and clicking on the folded paper with a pencil icon in the toolbar
<Doug> So - if you click on the 3m item, that item will be displayed in the right page.
<Doug> The icon in the toolbar changes from an ADD (with the plus) to an Edit (with the pencil) icon.
<Doug> Clicking on the edit icon opens the edit screen for that item.
<WalterOS2> Doug:--I'm experiencing weirdness again.
<Doug> can you describe what it is doing?
<WalterOS2> As soon as I log in, instead of getting the folders I get a box containing the names of the folders.
<WalterOS2> I also get a message telling me to clear my cache.
<WalterOS2> I've tried doing a "Reload" but that doesn't help.
<Doug> Hmmm. try clearing the browser cache, shut down the browser, restart the browser, clear the cache again, and then go to the site.
<Doug> Reload won't work.
<Doug> The plug-in keeps track of what data it requests from the server. If the browser (incorrectly) trys to give it data from the cache when it should be getting data from the server, you will get that message.
<Doug> But with Mozilla - you have to shut down the browser, then clear the cache, then go back to the site.
<Doug> If you don't shut down the browser, it often doesn't completely clean up its cache problem.
<WalterOS2> I'm stuck at "Getting Data".
<WalterOS2> Specifically from www2.warpdoctor.org.
<WalterOS2> Plus I've done as you suggested about clearing cache twice.
<WalterOS2> It happens immediately after I log-in, and before I touch anything else.
<WalterOS2> It behaves as though it can't load the folders.
<WalterOS2> Still stuck...................
<KenKrchnr> Which version of Mozilla?
<Doug> Try this, go to http://www2.warpdoctor.org/adminx.html - then go back to www2.warpdoctor.org
<WalterOS2> Ken-IBM Web Browser 2.0.3
<Doug> Or - rather lets try this.
<Doug> Close the browser
<WalterOS2> Done.
<Doug> Then open the browser and go to www2.warpdoctor.org/adminx.html
<Doug> Then logon on that screen.
<Doug> As soon as you get logged on, then go to www2.warpdoctor.org
<Doug> Lets see if the folders come up that way.
<WalterOS2> Same as before. :-(
<WalterOS2> Did I break something?
<Doug> IF you go directly to www2.warpdoctor.org, after starting the browser, do the folders show up.
<Doug> (before you try to log in)
<WalterOS2> Yes.
<Doug> Ok - sounds like I have some kind of timing problem with that browser. I will look at that this week.
<WalterOS2> It was working great until a few minutes ago. :-)
<WalterOS2> Unfortunately, I don't think I have another browser installed. Let me check....
<Doug> I just switched to the IBM browser. I will use that for a few days this week and see how it works. I haven't tested on that browser in 6 months or more
<WalterOS2> I've got Netscape 4.61. I'll try that.
<WalterOS2> Doug: A new one was just posted to ecomstation.com.
<WalterOS2> I'm using that one.
<Doug> New IBM browser?
<KenKrchnr> Yes, it's based on Mozilla 1.6
<Doug> oh oh - Mozilla v 1.6 no workie on the site.
<WalterOS2> Netscape works, but it doesn't offer me the plugin option.
<Doug> From the settings window you mean?
<WalterOS2> Yes.
<WalterOS2> Also I've got installed in the \home\plugins directory, but it doesn't show up in the About Plugins list.
<Doug> Normally that means that It thinks you don't have the plug-in installed.
<WalterOS2> Should I try reinstalling it using WarpIn?
<Doug> The directory netscape uses is something like c:\programs\netscape\program\plugins
<Doug> Yeah - on the second page of the install routine, look at the directory that it is using for netscape.
<Doug> I see the spacing in the folder list is all messed up in Netscape. I will have to go back and look at that also
<Doug> Sorry - I have a conflict between ezIrc and DrRexx on my machine
<wdl> Doug: If Mozilla 1.6 - "no workie" --- what's the *most recent* that DOES work?
<Doug> Mozilla v 1.7 appears to work fine.
<wdl> Aargh! v1.7 is buggy. ...??
<Doug> The problem with Mozilla v 1.6 is that it was used as a base for a couple of other browsers
<Doug> Bill - buggy in regular normal use?
<wdl> Doug: So it's said in the mozilla Usenet newsgroup
<Gord> wdl .. buggy how? I'm using 1.7b and it is pretty good.
<WalterOS2> I reinstalled WDREXXIN for Netscape 4.61 and WarpIn shows the right path. However it doesn't show up in About|Plugins
<WalterOS2> :-(
<wdl> Doug: I've not installed it - to risky, 'cording to The Gurus.
<wdl> "to" = "too"
<Doug> risky as in security issues, or risky as in crashes a lot?
<KenKrchnr> I'm using Firefox .09 right now for warpdoctor, seems fine. (yes, I know there are bug reports against this version as well)
<wdl> Doug: If I *only* use Mozilla 1.6 - nothing else active at all, will 1.6 *then* work OK?
<Doug> Ken - I looked for FireFox v .9 a week ago and couldn't find it. Can you point me to where I could get it?
<wdl> Doug: Crashes. At least in some situations not well-specified.
<Doug> Walter - Where is Netscape installed on your machine?
<Doug> bill - I have used v 1.7a and I haven't had any problems with it yet.
<Doug> Bill - it didn't on my machine. I spent a couple of hours last week looking at that. I will look at that some more this week.
<wdl> Doug: Hmmm. Again, thouigh: if 1.6 is my *only* browser app, will it work??
<WalterOS2> O:\INTERNET\NETSCOMM\
<Doug> It appears that v 1.6 handles threading differently than v 1.5 or v 1.7
<KenKrchnr> http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.9/contrib/firefox-os2-0.9.zip
<WalterOS2> WarpIn found it OK.
<Doug> v 1.6 will work on the site in JavaScript mode fine. It doesn't like the plug-in.
<WalterOS2> I'm going to try installing wdRexxIn from scratch.
<Doug> thanks ken.
<KenKrchnr> You can find the news release at - http://www.os2voice.org/News.html
<KenKrchnr> http://www.os2voice.org/NewsR.html#SW:_Firefox_0.9_available
<Kris> Anyone working here with Mozilla 1.7 release?
<Doug> I have used v 1.7 for a few hours and it worked ok during that time.
<Kris> In a chat session I'm kicked out after a few minutes, apparently ... (-:
<WalterOS2> "About Plugins" is accessing the wrong drive! <Grr>
<WalterOS2> WarpIn is apparently doing it right however.
<Doug> If you guys get a chance this week, please look through the Site Help and tell me if it makes sense.
<Doug> I am hoping to have enough help that people can figure out how to work the site on their own.
<WalterOS2> Guess it's about time to quit.
<WalterOS2> Doug: I suggest you post an announcement on OS2VOICE.
<WalterOS2> Sorry:-VOICE NEWS
<WalterOS2> I still can't access the site using the Plugin using Netscape 4.61.
<Doug> I would like another week to track down bugs before we open it up to everyone
<WalterOS2> I'll work on it this week.
<WalterOS2> Doug: OK.
<WalterOS2> Anyone want to move adjournment?
<Doug> so move
<wdl> So move
<Gord> I move we adjourn
<WalterOS2> All in favour of adjournment, please type Aye.
<wdl> Aye
<Gord> Aye
<Doug> aye
<KenKrchnr> aye
<WalterOS2> All opposed, please type Nay.
14:06:07 <WalterOS2> Motion is carried. Meeting adjourned.

- Respectfully submitted,
- WD Loughman, Acting-Secretary, VOICE.
