WarpDoctor - General Meeting for 2004-06-20
12:04:23 -> | ... meeting ... session ...| (added by Secretary wdl)
<wdl> Hi Walter.
<WalterOS2> Hi Bill
<WalterOS2> It looks like most people are on vacation.
<WalterOS2> In addition I haven't been able to prepare an agenda this week.
<wdl> Agendas are passe, it seems?
<WalterOS2> Anyone have anything they want to talk about or questions they need answered?
<WalterOS2> wdl: Why?
<wdl> Voice meeting yesterday - no agenda. Damn' near no meeting.
<MikeG> Yes, has anyone got a LinkSys Wireless working with OS/2 (G version)
<WalterOS2> wdl: Was there an announcement for a VOICE meeting?
<wdl> Walter: No. But I (and others) thought 1st/3rd Saturdays was a regular schedule - so showed up.
<wdl> Bren: MikeG has a question on the floor: has anyone got a LinkSys Wireless working with OS/2 (G version)?
<WalterOS2> to change the VOICE meeting(s) for one month, but I'm not sure when.
<Bren> I am curious about that too.
<wdl> Bren/Mike: as am I. Hope someone shows - with an answer.
<WalterOS2> MikeG: Don't look at me. :-) I'm not into wireless. :-)
<MikeG> That's too bad... would be nice to get it working
<Kris> Mike: I've a Linksys wireless router not working at all in OS/2 (-:
<MikeG> A router? Is OS/2 plugged in cable or wireless?
<Kris> OS/2 was (is) connected to adsl. The router has a web based interface, giving a "javascript error" when trying to connect top adsl
<Kris> It's just crap.
<MikeG> Oh.. so the router is having problems connecting asdl. Can you configure it via telnet or am I mis-understanding you?
<Kris> Dunno. I just have given in on that one. Also, keep in mind they sold different models to Europe and the US, so to compare already is difficult.
<Kris> Also, keep in mind Linksys doesn't exist anymore, as it has been acquired by a competitor early last year.
<MikeG> Cisco right?
<Kris> Yes, I think so. Bottom line, that means there is no support nor there will be any fixes.
<MikeG> Hmmm... can I ask anything here?
<Kris> make that: there won't be any fixes.
<wdl> MikeG: Yes.
<MikeG> Ok, I have asked a number of people - I am trying to continue learningt C / C++ using Watcom. So far it is going well, but I do not like EPM. I am trying out different editors to use. I have use JEdit - like it alot. Someone pointed me to MED (Mr Ed) - the OS/2 version is old. I have had luck running the new v3.00 MED under Odin. Any comments on other editors?
<Kris> Why is MEd for OS/2 not good enough?
<MikeG> I seems ok - I was just looking at some of the new stuff that was added to v3.00.
<MikeG> I ==> it
<Kris> I can't think of anything "new" Med for OS/2 should ask for. Can you?
<WalterOS2> I've been using FlexEdit, which is part of the FileStar/2 package for several months. I really like it.
<WalterOS2> FlexEdit is better behaved wrt the Desktop than a lot of other editors.
<Kris> Walter: are there differemt colours for different tags etc... etc... ?
<MikeG> The old MED is fine - I'm just looking. Have to look at FlexEdit
<WalterOS2> FileStar/2 URL is http://www.filestar.com/pages/filestar.html.
<WalterOS2> It came as part of the bonus packages with some OS/2 versions.
<WalterOS2> It was also part of the Warp Companion book/disc.
<MikeG> I never tried Filestar - I have used UniMaint for years. That's a good question though - does it have color highlighting?
<WalterOS2> Highlighting is coloured, but I don't think tags, etc. are.
<Kris> Then it is no match for MEd.
<MikeG> Kris - have you tried JEdit?
<Kris> Yes. To slow to my taste.
<MikeG> Slow on my K6 system but runs ok on the Intellistation. Big drawback to any Java program.
<Kris> Right. But you haven't answered yet: what is Med for OS/2 missing according to you?
<MikeG> Nothing... As I said I'm just trying any of them. One of the reasons I tried the Windows MED version was to check my Odin install. I have been making Odin WarpIn installs for a couple people and myself in the Yahoo group.
<Kris> To pay the shareware fee for med for OS/2 perhaps would serve a better case, wouldn't you think so?
<MikeG> Sure.
<wdl> What are the *drawbacks* to MED, if any??
<MikeG> Maybe I have the OS/2 version setup wrong - can it place tabs at the top of the window with more than one text file open?
<Kris> I just can't miss it. The only "drawback2 mayby is you have to be a bit more clever than usual. For instance, pmview.rcs isn't recognized (no syntax colours). You have to rename the file to pmview.rc
<MikeG> Can you have more than 1 file open at a time with the OS/2 version - or am I doing something wrong?
<Kris> Of course you can. Why do you think you can'T?
<MikeG> Ok - that was my mistake.
<Kris> There is always the F8 key to have an overviewe of the open files.
<MikeG> Ok - that was what I was missing.
<Kris> Feel free to email me if you would have any more questions later on.
<MikeG> Great... thanks.
<Kris> It could be the window monitor is out of the screen (at the very edge really). You'll have to bring it back then with the mouse.
<MikeG> It was closed until I hit the F8 key. I know it is a small thing but the tabs would be nice - oh and move the toolbars to the left side. But, let me use it more maybe it is what I wanted.
<MikeG> If I do I'll register it - have you registered it?
<Kris> Of course I have, that's me :-)
<MikeG> Hey.. I always register stuff if I use it. Well OS/2 at least... I am bad at the Microsoft stuff.
<Kris> btw: you don't need the F8 key to switch from one file to another. You can position the files half (or more or less) screen , and navigate from one to another with the mouse.
<wdl> I don't suppose there's a later version than 126? That's the one I've registered - and use.
<Kris> You also can "uncover" files by moving the files on top by holding the nouse button on the title bar.
<Kris> Just a moment...
<MikeG> No not on the website... the OS/2 version stops at 1.26.
<wdl> Thanks. I thought so, ...but "hope springs eternal".
<Kris> Right, 1.26 is the latest, 30 of juin 1999. Nevertheless, what is almost perfect doesn't need much of changes, does it?
<wdl> Oh my no! I'm using stuff that's ten years old still. Or more. "If it ain't broke..."
<MikeG> No changes just the little things.
<MikeG> Ok... yes this is working right. I had taken out the parameters that the Watcom passes to the editor - now it is jumping to the errors in MED. I think you are right - I think this is going to work - you have converted me.
<MikeG> That's good because I have a lot of errors
<MikeG> It highlights correct for Rexx programs?
<wdl> MikeG: Does here.
<Kris> I'm not very good at Rexx I have to confess, but I think it does.
<MikeG> Well maybe I register it and then beg for a couple features...
<Kris> Guys, my cat calls for her supper (it's 10,40 PM here), give me some minutes please.
<MikeG> Ok, I can move the toolbar to the left side...
<wdl> Hi Guest/Dark.
<wdl> Coming up on two hours... I'll be leaving in a few minutes.
<wdl> Okay; that's it for me.
<wdl> 'Bye
