WarpDoctor - General Meeting for 2004-02-08

12:06:10 <WalterOS2> This meeting of Warpdoctor is now in session.
<wdl> We'll see... I shut off everything computer except the CPU.
<WalterOS2> Bill, if your machine dies during the meeting, I always record the log, and so does Ken.
<WalterOS2> One of us can get it to you if the need arises.
<wdl> Yes, I know.
<WalterOS2> Bill: Did you shut off the monitor too?
<wdl> Ha! I'm back on the mains.
<WalterOS2> Great.
<WalterOS2> OK,
<wdl> Waklter: ;-) No...
<wdl> "Wakler" = Walter.
<WalterOS2> A. Old Business
<WalterOS2> 1. Status of the XPager issue.
<WalterOS2> AFAIK, nothing's been done about it. :-(
<WalterOS2> Here's Mr. Warpdoctor. :-)
<Doug> hi guys
<WalterOS2> Hi Doug
<WalterOS2> Doug, has anything been done about the XPager problem?
<Doug> as far as I know we are at the same spot we were at last week
<WalterOS2> Is there any chance *you* could fix the problem?
<Doug> I don't know. I can certainly look at it. But if it is ok with everyone, I would like to delay looking at for a month or so to finish up WD
<WalterOS2> Well, I virtually always have XPager running, so it makes it awkward to run WD much. :-(
<WalterOS2> I've gotten so spoiled with XPager, that it makes it hard for me to work when it's not around. :-(
<Doug> I know - perhaps those folks running xPager would want to just use the JS version until (we hopefully) get the xPage problem fixed.
<WalterOS2> My first choice for be for Bart or Ulrich to get serious about fixing the problem.
<WalterOS2> Doug: OK, I could do that.
<KenKrchnr> And the workaround for the problem isn't all that inconvenient. I agree with Doug that his time is better spent completing WD.
<WalterOS2> I forgot about the JS version. :-(
<Doug> You can't do input with the JS version (yet) - but you can do everything else
<WalterOS2> Ken: Depends how many jobs you keep on your Desktop at a time. :-)
<WalterOS2> But I think I agree that finishing WD has priority over fixing that bug.
<Doug> Walter - you just need a bigger screen so that you can keep everything in one desktop. How about one of those 50 inch plasma jobs?
<WalterOS2> Hi NeilsJ
<NielsJ> Hi Everyone!
<WalterOS2> Doug: Sure, if you're paying for it.:-)
<Doug> hi neils
<Doug> heh - its only money!
<WalterOS2> Neils, was it you who said you were experienced in C++?
<NielsJ> Definitely not!
<WalterOS2> OK. Someone new popped in awhile ago, who said that he was. I've forgotten his name.
<KenKrchnr> Maybe that was Bart :-)
<Doug> he came once I think.
<WalterOS2> No--it was someone who we thought could work on Doug's team with him.
<WalterOS2> OK, is everybody agreed that we'll let Doug finish WD first, and fix the XPager bug later?
<Gord> Yes
<WalterOS2> Maybe I should have asked if anyone has a problem with that.
<NielsJ> I agree,
<WalterOS2> OK, Doug: carry on as you have been. :-)
<Doug> rodger
<WalterOS2> A2: Switch-over to VOICE2
<WalterOS2> Ken is that complete now?
<KenKrchnr> Yes, everything is on voice2.
<WalterOS2> Where is the "production" WarpDoctor running now?
<KenKrchnr> Real WD on voice2, test WD on voice3
<WalterOS2> Great!
<KenKrchnr> Test WD is www2.warpdoctor.org
<WalterOS2> So I guess VOICE1 is wondering where we all went. :-)
<WalterOS2> Good job, everyone. We made that switch-over, and probably almost no one noticed a thing.
<WalterOS2> That's the way it should go., but often it doesn't.
<KenKrchnr> I'm not sure the newsletter people would agree with that. :-)
<KenKrchnr> They Noticed.
<WalterOS2> ??
<WalterOS2> What happened with them?
<KenKrchnr> They had some ftp problems at first. I believe all are happy now.
<WalterOS2> You talking about the NL staff?
<KenKrchnr> Yes.
<WalterOS2> OK, I thought of that. Maybe I should have been clearer. I meant the users at large. :-)
<Doug> NL = Neverland? Is Michael Jackson on staff now?
<WalterOS2> Must be. :-)
<WalterOS2> Next question.
<WalterOS2> A2a&b Switchover
<WalterOS2> Ken, do you have anything else you want to add (esp. mail)?
<KenKrchnr> Mail has been updated, and extended...
<WalterOS2> extended how?
<KenKrchnr> We've added spam filtering (Bogofilter), Norman virus control, a script to validate news postings and a script to reject those who connect with a spoof of our domain or ip.
<KenKrchnr> (last count we had gotten over 700 winvirus messages)
<WalterOS2> OK, and for those who don't know, mail (with attachment) is now getting through from Doug to me. :-)
<WalterOS2> Ken: That's a lot!
<WalterOS2> Can you briefly describe Bogofilter?
<Doug> Ken has been a busy boy
<WalterOS2> busy: very, and he still manages to run a business. :-)
<KenKrchnr> Bogo is a Bayesian filter specifically for email. We are still in the training stage.
<WalterOS2> Is it free?
<KenKrchnr> Yes it is
<WalterOS2> Where can it be gotten from?
<WalterOS2> Hi Craig
<KenKrchnr> It's on Hobbes, at least.
<NielsJ> You get it from http://bogofilter.sourceforge.net/
<WalterOS2> OK, I'll take a look at it.
<CraigC> Hi, guys. This is not only my first visit to warpdoctor but also my first irc, so forgive bloopers. (The agenda is unavailable now, so I'll try to intuit from the conversation.)
<WalterOS2> How would you rate it compared to JunkSpy, which I realize isn't free?
<WalterOS2> Can anyone else NOT get the agenda?
<KenKrchnr> JunkSpy is updated for you, you have to maintain Bogo.
<WalterOS2> The Agenda's URL is http://www.warpdoctor.org/Agendas/warpdoc_2004-02-08.html
<WalterOS2> Ken: How effective is it, compared with JS 3.0, do you have any idea?
<CraigC> Thanks, Walter. That link worked.
<WalterOS2> CraigC: Right now, we discussing the recent changes to the new VOICE server, VOICE2.
<KenKrchnr> I haven't compared, as I don't have JunkSpy. But we're at 93% or so success now with Bogo.
<KenKrchnr> I tend to let it err towards letting some thru to minimize false positives.
<wdl> Uh-oh. >> Warning << PG&E burped again...
<WalterOS2> Ken: JS claims to be 95%, which was about what I was getting. However I get so much junk, that I've added an additional filtering program.
<WalterOS2> It's freeware, called RBLCheck, and can be found on Hobbes.
<WalterOS2> It's quite effective, but doesn't have a "Global Exceptions" I need something like that because it's catching email from Bill and Jonas and treating it like spam.
<WalterOS2> I'm going to contact the author about it.
<WalterOS2> Anywhere, I got us offtrack.
<WalterOS2> Let's see if we can get back to the agenda.
<WalterOS2> B. New Business
<WalterOS2> 1. Warpdoctor Status
<WalterOS2> Doug, can update that for us? :-)
<Doug> www2.warpdoctor.org is running the new site on Apache. I think I have found all the gotchas on the switch
<Doug> You don't have to change your HOSTS file or anything now
<Doug> I have introduce some bug on my version of the plug-in that crashes the browser, so I am off fixing that.
<Doug> But we seem to be running pretty well on Apache. Thanks to Ken.
<WalterOS2> Is that everything?
<Doug> If any of you make updates to the database, like entering drivers or such, would you please email me
<Doug> That way I will know not to overwrite the database with the next update.
<KenKrchnr> Anybody else feel the excitement of being told we can work with the new version? :-)
<wdl> ...on mains again.
<Doug> ooops - I need to send you all your user ids and passwords, if you don't remember what yours is (are?)
<Doug> hi mark
<WalterOS2> Hi Mark
<MADodel> hello Doug and Walter
<WalterOS2> Doug: Do you want to limit data-entering to just this group for now?
<NielsJ> Doug: I just noticed, that the folders under drivers open when you click on them, but the ones under software, applications don't.
<Doug> Nope - anyone can enter data. They can create themselves a user id and put in drivers information.
<Doug> (We are pretty much limited to inputting driver stuff right now)
<WalterOS2> Do you want me to put out an announcement?
<WalterOS2> hehe
<Doug> I think we our group ought to work with the site for a couple of weeks before we announce to the world.
<Doug> Make sure everyone is happy with everything.
<WalterOS2> That's what I meant in my previous question.
<Doug> And right now there are going to be some bugs and rough spots that hopefully we will get ironed out in the next few weeks.
<Doug> Sorry - I misunderstood your question.
<WalterOS2> So everyone, bang away at the site, so that bugs show up now, rather than later. :-)
<WalterOS2> Doug: Misunderstood. That's OK. :-)
<WalterOS2> OK, let's move on.
<WalterOS2> B.2: VOICE1
<WalterOS2> So what should we do with VOICE1?
<WalterOS2> I'm for setting up some scripts and backing up/mirroring VOICE2 onto it every night or so.
<KenKrchnr> I had intended that in the next few weeks we'd start backing up what's on voice2 to voice1...
<WalterOS2> I'll have to find out from Vaughn if he has the hardware to move the server.
<KenKrchnr> sort of the opposite of where we were before.
<WalterOS2> Ken: Sounds good.
<WalterOS2> We wouldn't want VOICE1 to get lonely after all. :-)
<WalterOS2> BTW, just to make it clear for the newcomers, VOICE1 is the original VOICE server located in Michigan at ThinkExtreme.
<WalterOS2> VOICE2 is located in NJ(?) at Ken's place of business.
<WalterOS2> VOICE2 is now our current server.
<KenKrchnr> And voice3 is *in* my office :-)
<WalterOS2> :-)
<KenKrchnr> Oh yeah, we have new ip's as well. voice2 is 206.40.205.124, voice3 is .125
<KenKrchnr> So if anyone has the old ip's in their hosts file or elsewhere, you should change them before the old ip's disappear.
<WalterOS2> OK, There isn't a lot on this agenda, so unless someone has something else to bring up, I'd like to spend the rest of the time helping Bill get eComStation installed on his computer.
<KenKrchnr> Voice3 is only for www2.warpdoctor.org
<WalterOS2> BTW, just to make it clear for the newcomers, VOICE1 is the original VOICE server located in
<wdl> Walter: Thanks, but I'll pass on eCS for now. I'm downloading bits of DDK...
<WalterOS2> Michigan at ThinkExtreme.

<WalterOS2> <KenKrchnr> Voice3 is only for www2.warpdoctor.org
<WalterOS2> OK.
<wdl> Walter: ...and can't interrupt it, cause IBM won't let me use awget, etc...
<NielsJ> I downloaded DDK yesterday
<KenKrchnr> Old voice2 ip was 206.135.240.102
<wdl> Walter: I have to use Mozilla, which (1.3b) doesn't do restarts. :-(
<WalterOS2> Craig: I just repeated the last bit of the log, because I thought you should have the info.
<KenKrchnr> Old WD test was 206.135.240.98
<Doug> NielsJ - do you mean you downloaded all the files in the DDK site?
<WalterOS2> BTW, Bill, I've upgraded to Mozilla 1.6a, and I think I'm going to stay there away.
<WalterOS2> It's is so stable, and doesn't have any of the bugs some of the earlier versions had.
<WalterOS2> The only problem is that sometimes it has problems with IBM ftp sites.
<WalterOS2> However, all recent Mozillas have had the problem.
<NielsJ> Doug: Yes, I thought at some point in time they should go on the WD site.
<KenKrchnr> Niels is gonna have all of IBM on his computer before long ;-)
<Doug> Niels - thanks - very good idea
<WalterOS2> As Mark likes to say, Mozilla 1.6a rocks!
<Doug> Niels - how many files are there?
<WalterOS2> Anyway, now that we covered the Agenda, I guess we could officially close the meeting, if everyone is so inclined.
<NielsJ> Doug - Not quite sure, They are on another system, than the one I am using pt. I will let you know.
<Doug> move to adjourn
<Doug> Thanks NielsJ - please let me know.
<Doug> when you get a chance
<WalterOS2> All in favour of adjourning, please type Aye.
<Doug> aye
<NielsJ> Aye
<CraigC> aye
<wdl> Well, I'll have DDK too. Only 97Mb to go... ;-)
<KenKrchnr> Niels, do you want a new directory on WD to u/l to?
<Doug> seesh .. that's big Bill
<WalterOS2> That's even worse than SmartSuite.
<KenKrchnr> Aye
<WalterOS2> Bill: esp if your power is flakey.
<wdl> I've an unlimited flat-rate voice line. Power isn't *that* flaky.
13:17:12 <WalterOS2> The motion is carried, the meeting is (officially) adjourned.
