WarpDoctor - General Meeting for 2003-10-05

<WalterOS2> This session of WarpDoctor is now in session.
<WalterOS2> The agenda is available at http://www.warpdoctor.org/Agendas/warpdoc_2003-10-05.html .
<WalterOS2> Ken, can you take the log in Bill's absence?
<KenKrchnr> Got it.
<WalterOS2> thx
<WalterOS2> OK, I guess we'll continue to work on debugging of Doug's plugin. I'm sure he wants it to perfect for Warpstock. VBG
<WalterOS2> So, Doug, I'll turn the "floor" over to you. :-)
<Doug> well - I was just trying to upload the lastest stuff to voice3 and I think I froze it up.
<Doug> Ken - can you remote boot?
<KenKrchnr> Hang on a sec -
<Doug> In the meantime - more on xPager
<WalterOS2> Yes, fire away.!
<Doug> I worked with altering the plug-in apps to work with xPager - meaning making the plug-in apps work without being made a child window of the browser window.
<Doug> I had, however, forgotten that the method I intended to use only works if the browser window size if frozen.
<KenKrchnr> Doug, it's still running. What are you missing?
<Doug> ken - I am trying to start DB2 and my SSH prompt and the DTOC screen are both stuck. It may be that it is displaying a user id/password screen that I cannot see.
<Doug> The problem is: when the browser creates a page with a plug-in on it, the area alloted to the plug-in is a fixed size.
<KenKrchnr> OK, I'll see if I can get at it.
<Doug> The size is specifed by some parameters to the <EMBED> tag that specifies the plug-in.
<WalterOS2> Unfortunately, I didn't get time this week to get a case together to present to Ulrich. I had a rather hectic week. :-( Hopefully, I can get it done this week.
<Doug> If the browser window is sized smaller than the plug-in area, the browser creates scroll bars to scroll the window.
<Doug> Unfortunately - in PM, a window consists of a lot of parts: the frame, the title bar, the window presentation area, and the scroll bars.
<Doug> I can make the plug-in application window move with the browser window, when the browser window moves
<Doug> but when the browser window is sized smaller, the plug-in app window overlays the frame of the browser window, because it doesn't change size -
<Doug> because the plug-in area allocated on the page doesn't change size.
<Doug> I hope this makes sense
<WalterOS2> Oops! :-)
<WalterOS2> I think I understand most of it.
<Doug> So the upshot is: we are stuff with an incompatibility with xPager and the plug-in until Ulrich can fix xPager, if he ever does.
<Doug> stuff = stuck
<WalterOS2> Doug: I would appreciate it if you could email a summary of what XPager is doing wrong and how you would like it changed.
<Doug> While we are waiting, are there topics you want me to be sure an cover at Warpstock?
<Doug> ok walter - will do.
<KenKrchnr> Doug, I rebooted voice3.
<WalterOS2> thx
<Doug> thanks ken
<Doug> DTOC doesn't seem to be responding.
<Doug> I can get in, but the desktop doesn't respond to any of my frantic clicking.
<KenKrchnr> DTOC and Domino don't play well together. It kills the desktop.
<Doug> I wonder if turning off the LOGOs would help.
<KenKrchnr> What do you need to do? DB2 restarts automatically on a reboot.
<Doug> ok - let me try something then
<KenKrchnr> Walter, I heard from Jeremy. We put the Warpstock banner up on os2voice.org.
<WalterOS2> OK, that's good. :-)
<WalterOS2> When's Jeremy going on vacation, do you know?
<KenKrchnr> No, I don't know.
<WalterOS2> That's OK.
<WalterOS2> Do you have the desktop on voice3 back up?
<Doug> I am bypassing that, and trying to start the connection manager from the browser
<WalterOS2> Maybe I should have asked Doug. :-)
<WalterOS2> OK
<WalterOS2> Doug: What's your current status?
<Doug> I will know in about a minute
<WalterOS2> OK...
<Doug> I don't think it is going to work today - I can't get logged in
<Doug> Sorry.
<Doug> The database is not running.
<KenKrchnr> Doug, can the connection manager start from a script?
<WalterOS2> What seems to be causing the problem. IOW what's different from the last time?
<Doug> Yes- that is what I was trying. But when I try to access the database from SSh it says that it is not running.
<Doug> I am afraid that if the database is started automatically on reboot, you get a logon screen that requires a user id and password before the database will start.
<Doug> I don't know of a way around this.
<Doug> The same problem seems to happen if you have connected drives from the network.
<WalterOS2> Catch-22.
<KenKrchnr> Hang on a sec -
<Doug> And --- there is usually an OK prompt that must be clicked on to finish the logon sequence, which make auto-rebooting tricky
<WalterOS2> Can't DB2 be "told" to use a script after it boots?
<WalterOS2> Then you could put the userid and password in the script.
<Doug> When DB2 "starts", is uses the user ID and password of whoever is currently logged on. If that user ID does not have DB2 administrator authority, all bets are off.
<Doug> If no one is currently logged on, DB2 (or probably UPM) will throw up a local logon screen where you enter a user id and password.
<WalterOS2> So DB2 has no "background" mode?
<Doug> If you can get a user id logged on the system BEFORE DB2 is started, then the problem is avoided.
<WalterOS2> Background is a lousy term, but I can't think of a better one.
<KenKrchnr> Which is what the startup script does.
<WalterOS2> So have the startup script log in with admin status.
<Doug> It does - and it runs in the background. It just needs to use some authentication for knowing that the person trying to start/stop DB2 has permissions to do so.
<KenKrchnr> I'm gonna reboot once more and see if it starts correctly
<WalterOS2> I do that on certain computers on my LAN at home.
<Doug> Yes - ideally, the startup.cmd would log on locally, and then attempt to start DB2. This will work, as long as there are not network connections hanging around that will be reconnected
<Doug> which in turn require a logon.
<WalterOS2> Any OS/2 logon can be set up to provide the password in the script.
<WalterOS2> Or ask it from the operator.
<WalterOS2> For example: LOGON walter /p:metcalf
<KenKrchnr> That machine is off the network, so that shouldn't be a problem. And the startup script does a logon before starting DB2.
<Doug> That should work then
<KenKrchnr> The only thing I can think of is maybe the requester hasn't finished starting by the time the startup script tries to logon.
<Doug> Ken - are you going to WarpStock?
<KenKrchnr> Yes, should be there.
<Doug> Are you bringing a laptop with you?
<KenKrchnr> Yes.
<Doug> Could I use your laptop to demo WarpDoctor at WS?
<KenKrchnr> Sure.
<Doug> Thanks - I'll find you there. This saves me having to bring a desktop machine and set it up
<WalterOS2> DOUG: /logon has many different parameters that give an amazing range of flexibility. Check them out to get the best one.
<KenKrchnr> Doug, I rebooted voice3, it is definitely logged on now.
<WalterOS2> There is even one to specify you want to logon with admin privileges.
<WalterOS2> Now we're getting somewhere.
<WalterOS2> :-)
<Doug> ok _ i'll go look
<KenKrchnr> Says "DB2START processing was successful"
<Doug> Yes - i can get into a DB2 session
<WalterOS2> Doug: Are you ready for Ken to change his HOSTS file?
<Doug> not yet.
<WalterOS2> OK.
<Doug> connection manager is running. Let me see if I can get to the home page.
<Doug> Ok - we are up and running.
<Doug> Ken - if you could switch the pointy thingy
<KenKrchnr> OK, it's switched
<Doug> This version includes support for Netscape, both in JS mode and plug-in mode.
<WalterOS2> Doug: I got an error after going to www.warpdoctor.org
<Doug> What error?
<WalterOS2> Where is the new version?
<KenKrchnr> Same here. REXX error in wdtoolbar -
<KenKrchnr> SAY "WDEMBED.NAME.I =" WDEMBED.NAME.I
<Doug> what you are seeing is debug messages I thought I had removed before I uploaded the new version. Ignore then.
<WalterOS2> "Invalid path entry in OS2.ini for Warpdoctor Plugin - path.
<Doug> You can make that message window very small, but don't shut it down.
<WalterOS2> I got that message twice.
<Doug> Walter - that is an error.
<WalterOS2> What do we do about it? :-)
<Doug> hang - I have to close IRC for a second. I'll be right back.
<Doug> sorry about that.
<WalterOS2> ISP problems?
<Doug> No _ i get a conflict between the plug-n and ezirc sometimes.
<WalterOS2> Oh.
<KenKrchnr> Looks a lot better in Netscape now :-)
<Doug> walter - it sounds like the entry in your OS2.ini went away. You could try reinstalling the lastest plug-in.
<Doug> Do you get the plus/minus icons in the list?
<WalterOS2> What's the latest version and where is it?
<Doug> try www.warpdoctor.org/plugin_install.html
<KenKrchnr> Yes, all looks good so far.
<WalterOS2> Negatory
<WalterOS2> :-)
<Doug> The folder list in netscape very different - under the covers - from the one for Mozilla based browsers.
<Doug> And it is not quite as good in netscape yet.
<Doug> but it is close.
<Doug> walter - did plugin_install.html work for you?
<KenKrchnr> Hmmm, Netscape died and left its droppings all over my desktop :-(
<Doug> try refresh now for the desktop.
<Doug> Netscape does not die very well.
<Doug> Kris - could you please send me your email address?
<KenKrchnr> I tried that first. It's Netscape up to its old tricks tho'
<Doug> I have been using Firebird alot lately, and I am very pleased with it.
<KenKrchnr> Firebird is quite good, and some parts of Mozilla 1.5rc2 are also good.
<WalterOS2> Doug: I've tried twice to download the plugin from www.warpdoctor.org\plugin_install.html
<Doug> what happens?
<Doug> you can get it from ftp://www.warpdoctor.org
<Doug> the file is wdRexxin.wpi
<WalterOS2> and both times when I install it WarpIN gives me a CRC redundancy error.
<WalterOS2> I've downloaded it each time.
<Doug> Let me re-upload it again and see it that fixes it.
<WalterOS2> OK, I'll try that.
<Doug> I think I need to reboot here. back in a second
<Doug> back
<Doug> walter - did you get the install to work?
<WalterOS2> Well, I'm still getting the installation error, but it's occuring in one of the .hlp files, so I just told it "ignore" the error, and now I've got WD up.
<Doug> logon then and we can look at some screens
<WalterOS2> Maybe I'll completely uninstall wdRexxIn when I'm offline and then try to install.
<Doug> I'll upload a new copy - maybe something messed up on the upload.
<Doug> When everyone gets logged in you should see a different set of icons along the top.
<Doug> the 6th icon looks a little like a scroll
<Doug> This icon is for Folder HTML which is the HTML that appears at the top of the folder that is displayed inthe right window.
<Doug> For instance - if you click on the Download Folder - then the Drivers - then the Video Cards .etc folder
<Doug> you will see a single line of text at the top of the right window (below the title), and then multiple icons below that.
<Doug> The single line of text is actually Folder HTML. The icons below that are content items that are "in" that folder.
<WalterOS2> Doug: I got a WDPLUGIN.ERRORMESSAGE error after I typed my userid and password in and clicked OK.
<Doug> Walter - what did it say (and which browser are you using?)
<WalterOS2> I'll just lurk for the rest of the meeting. :-)
<WalterOS2> The error message was "Error - Close Application
<WalterOS2> WDPLUGIN.ERRORMESSAGE
<Doug> walter - switch to the JS mode and you can still some of the screens.
<WalterOS2> and I'm using Mozilla 1.4
<KenKrchnr> I'm in JS mode, running Mozilla 1.5rc2 right now.
<Doug> ok - go to download - drivers - video cards, etc.
<Doug> everyone there?
<KenKrchnr> Yep
<Doug> See the line of text that says "The vider drivers ..."
<Doug> That is Folder HTML. Each folder can contain folder HTML, and content items.
<Doug> The Folder HTML always appears at the top of a folder, above the content items. Folder HTML can be upto 5mb in size.
<WalterOS2> That gave me a "SYNTAX ERROR: Routine not found in xint = devcopy.xdevcopy.select(1)" after I clicked on the Apply button. :-(
<Doug> Some folders, like the HOME folder, only contain folder HTML.
<Doug> Walter try www.warpdoctor.org/settings_site.html - change to JS mode there, Click on Appy, then go back to the home page
<Doug> http://www.warpdoctor.org/home.html
<Doug> That should get you out of the Plug-in mode.
<WalterOS2> I'll try it, but I think the problem is I've got some corrupt code in my system. :-(
<Doug> Might be - Let me know when you get to Download - Drivers - Video Cards, etc....
<WalterOS2> OK, WD Clinic is up.
<WalterOS2> Now should I try to logon?
<Doug> Go to Download - drivers - Video Cards
<Doug> Nah - don't log yet.
<Doug> logon
<WalterOS2> OK, I'm there--finally. :-)
<Doug> ok - see the line of text at the top and the icons/items below that
<Doug> The line of text is something called folder HTML. The icons are content items.
<Doug> Each folder can contain one folder HTML, plus multiple content items.
<Doug> The TYPE of content item, is indicated by the icon. The types are: drivers, HCL, SCL, Documents, etc.
<Doug> Some folders, such as HOME, don't have any content items.
<Doug> Each folder has a field, ContentType that determines the TYPES of content that it can hold.
<Doug> If that field is blank for a folder, it cannot hold any content, but it can always have folder HTML.
<Doug> ContentType can also specify multiple content types, so that a folder can store different type items.
<WalterOS2> What do you mean by "folder HTML"?
<Doug> An example of that is some of the special WD folders (which you have to be logged on to see)
<Doug> Folder HTML is (up to) 5mb of HTML text that appears at the top of the folder when that folder is being displayed in the right side
<WalterOS2> sniff
<WalterOS2> I understand
<WalterOS2> thx
<Doug> Walter - you could log on if you want to, and then go look at WarpDoctor Special Folders
<Doug> and look at Site Help, Common/Reference
<Doug> Those folders can store mutliple types: HTML and Images.
<WalterOS2> Doug: let me know when you come to a convenient place to break off your explanation.
<Doug> Now if convenient
<Doug> is
<WalterOS2> I don't want to cut you off prematurely, but it *is* after 5.
<Doug> ok - move to adjourn
<Doug> (it is late after all)
<WalterOS2> All in favour, please type Aye.
<Doug> aye
<KenKrchnr> Aye
<WalterOS2> Aye
<WalterOS2> The motion is carried.
<KenKrchnr> Doug, seems to work quite well in Mozilla 1.5
<WalterOS2> This meeting is adjourned.
<WalterOS2> Thank you all for coming. :-)
