WarpDoctor - General Meeting for 2003-09-07
15:21:30 <WalterOS2> This meeting of Warpdoctor is now in session
15:23:27 <Rat-Salad> anyways.. WD meeting... *sits up straight and be's quiet*
15:23:28 <WalterOS2> OK, RS, ltr
15:23:47 <WalterOS2> be's??
15:24:23 <WalterOS2> The agenda is at:http://www.warpdoctor.org/Agendas/warpdoc_2003-09-07.html
15:24:28 <Rat-Salad> yeah... inproper english.. excuse me
15:24:36 <WalterOS2> For the latecomers. :-)
15:24:43 <WalterOS2> That's OK.
15:24:52 * Rat-Salad runs to get a beer before we start
15:25:19 <WalterOS2> However, we're really just carrying on where we left off last week.
15:25:52 <WalterOS2> So I'm not really going to formally follow the agenda.
15:26:37 <WalterOS2> Doug, could you summarize where we were last week and what's happened since?
15:26:55 <WalterOS2> Do we need to have the new IP?
15:27:23 <KenKrchnr> When we're ready I'll just redirect Warpdoctor.
15:27:34 <WalterOS2> Fine
15:27:52 <Doug> Where were we?????
15:28:23 <Doug> Ahh .. we were looking at some of the screens. Some people, like Kris and Mark, were having trouble getting the plug-in to work
15:28:35 <WalterOS2> Exactly
15:28:40 <Doug> Ken, however was using the plug-in just fine.
15:28:46 <WalterOS2> Kris is here this week. :-)
15:29:01 <WalterOS2> That sounds right.
15:29:07 <Doug> As for what has happened since last week.... the short answer is nothing much
15:29:40 <Doug> I am in the middle of an election and I will be VERY busy until Nov 4. So unfortunatly I won't be getting a whole bunch done.
15:30:45 <WalterOS2> Are you running for office?
15:30:52 <Doug> yeah - city council.
15:31:06 <WalterOS2> Have you done this before?
15:31:24 <Doug> Yes - I was on council before - 1995-1999
15:31:42 <WalterOS2> I guess you must have liked it. :-)
15:31:59 <Doug> some parts. Some parts are awful.
15:32:01 <WalterOS2> Listening to people's complaints...
15:32:21 <Doug> Till 2:00 am in the morning - (long meeting)
15:32:51 <WalterOS2> Ouch! Do they call you on the phone as well?
15:33:00 <Doug> of course.
15:33:10 <KenKrchnr> Politicians *listen*, but don't *hear* ;-)
15:33:26 <WalterOS2> Well, good for you. We need good people in politics.
15:33:38 <WalterOS2> It's something I could never do, though.
15:33:40 <Doug> It actually doesn't take very many people to get a reaction at the city level - most of the time.
15:33:51 <WalterOS2> I know.
15:34:36 <WalterOS2> Let's get back on topic. :-)
15:34:37 <KenKrchnr> Screwed up the quote, it was Politicians *listen*, but Statesmen *hear*
15:34:38 <Doug> anyway - I tried to see if I could find a reason for why some people couldn't get the plug-in to work.
15:35:14 <Doug> or, to be more specific. There are times when DrRexx starts and then immediately terminates.
15:35:20 <WalterOS2> Doug, what is the current version the plugin?
15:35:34 <Doug> This shows up as a blank screen with a line down the middle.
15:35:46 <Doug> The current plug-in is 2.04 I believe - same as last week.
15:35:54 <WalterOS2> A developer's worst nightmare.
15:36:11 <Doug> Especially since I can't debug or monitor DrRexx.
15:36:25 <Doug> It appears to be a conflict between DrRexx and other applications or DLLs
15:36:42 <WalterOS2> Doug: What's your URL or IP?
15:36:45 <Doug> For instance, it happens very regularly after I have run VAC++ v 4, or LPEX
15:36:57 <WalterOS2> I want to download the plugin.
15:37:36 <Doug> Ken - what is the IP of the server that has the FTP / home/ anonymous ?
15:37:49 <KenKrchnr> 206.135.240.98
15:37:55 <WalterOS2> Thx.
15:38:06 <Doug> Can you get to that FTP as anonymous?
15:38:17 <WalterOS2> 206.135.240.98
15:38:26 <KenKrchnr> Yes, use ftp://206.135.240.98 it goes right in
15:38:56 <Doug> The file you want is wdRexxIn.WPI
15:41:11 <Doug> Mark appeared to have a different problem than Kris. I think mark's problem might be related to speed.
15:41:25 <Doug> And the sequence things are done during the start up of the plug-in.
15:47:24 <WalterOS2> I downloaded the new version and tried to install it, but it didn't seem to take.
15:47:41 <Doug> which browser are you using?
15:47:55 <WalterOS2> I'm going to close down the chat and then try. I'll be back shortly.
15:48:02 <Kris> Doug: are you aware the install doesn't look at the config entry SET MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH= ??
15:48:14 <KenKrchnr> I haven't redirected warpdoctor yet, are we ready for that?
15:48:23 <Doug> ken - probably
15:48:36 <Doug> Kris - yes.
15:48:38 <Kris> I'm ready all the time
15:48:54 <Doug> I need to think about how to handle config.sys and os2.ini
15:50:23 <Doug> The way the install is currently setup, is that it tries to find all the browsers you have on your machine and to offer to install the plug-in to each/all of those browsers
15:50:55 <Doug> With MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH you can have one plug-in directory for multiple browsers.
15:51:21 <Kris> Doug: yes and I have here SET MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH=C:\Internet\Instekers
15:52:06 <Doug> Kris - do you know which versions of Mozilla/Firebird use MOX_PLUGIN_PATH? And when (at what version level) they started to use that option?
15:52:35 <Kris> doug: but the install just doesn't look at it. Worse, it didn't find the mozilla directory, as it didn't last week. Mid week I'd installed
15:52:54 <Kris> os2web, and the install now created there a plugin directory.
15:53:48 <KenKrchnr> OK, I switched it
15:53:49 <Doug> You are right - the plug-in installer does not look for MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH.
15:54:16 <Doug> However - I THINK that OS2WEB always, automatically creates a plugin directory under its main directory.
15:55:12 <Kris> Yes, but I had of course deleted this one too, as the plugins are elsewhere: SET MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH=C:\Internet\Instekers
15:55:13 <Doug> And I also THINK that OS2WEB doesn't use the MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH - although I am not sure on that.
15:56:02 <Kris> Doug: It does. Besides, the latest os2web is nothing more than m. 1.4
15:56:29 <WalterOS2> My Mozilla wdREXXin plugin window still says v2.02. ??
15:56:37 <Doug> ok - I didn't know there was a new OS2WEB out. I am using the one that is based on 1.1
15:57:14 <WalterOS2> 1.2 has been out for awhile.
15:57:30 <Kris> Walter: you have probably the same as I have: the install put the plugin "elsewhere"
15:58:09 <Kris> Make that the install putS the plugin "elsewhere"
15:58:33 <Doug> walter - which browser are you using?
15:59:33 <Doug> Kris - I have OS2WEB version 2.0. Is there a later version out?
16:01:03 <WalterOS2> There's a version of the plugin in the directory "plugins", but it's dated 07/21/2003.
16:01:20 <WalterOS2> I'm using Mozilla 1.4
16:01:29 <Doug> that is probably not the latest.
16:01:43 <WalterOS2> No.
16:01:45 <Doug> Where is your plugin directory?
16:02:29 <KenKrchnr> Newest is dated 8-14-03
16:04:26 <Kris> Guys, give me a minut. I'll close down mozzilla and launch os2web then.
16:04:49 <WalterOS2> I checked the plugin directories for both Netscape and Mozilla, and a current version of the plugin didn't get copied into either of them.
16:04:51 <Doug> walter - try to run the install/warpin again, and make sure that the entry for Mozilla 1.4a points to the correct directory.
16:05:15 <Doug> This is on the "second" page of the install - the one that says PACKAGES at the top.
16:05:31 <MADodel> Is there a new plugin?
16:05:39 <Doug> No - walter is trying to install
16:08:11 <Doug> how did it go?
16:11:13 <WalterOS2> WarpIn says the directories are correct, but nothing installs.
16:11:25 <WalterOS2> This is getting frustating.
16:11:28 <Kris> I'm back. os2web wouldn't connect to warpdoctor. But os2web sees the pluginsin \internet\instekers all right.
16:12:36 <Doug> what happens when you try to connect to www.warpdoctor.org/home.html ?
16:13:31 <Kris> guises me to Warpdoctor home
16:13:44 <Doug> Walter - what do you mean nothing installs?
16:13:47 <Kris> make that guides me
16:14:05 <Doug> Does the warpin installer give you any progress screens?
16:14:27 <WalterOS2> The plugin file ???doc.dll does not go into the plugins direct on either browser.
16:14:49 <WalterOS2> Or any other directory that I could find either.
16:15:24 <Doug> Ok try this: Run the installer again - on the PACKAGES page scroll to the last browser
16:15:27 <WalterOS2> warpin install seems to take a suspiciously short length of time.
16:15:33 <Doug> which is called USER SPECIFIED BROWSER
16:16:05 <Doug> double click the user specified browser until the little icon shows a package, and fill in the directory for some directory you have.
16:16:27 <Doug> After the install runs you should be able to find npwrpdoc.dll in that directory
16:17:01 <Doug> and to copy it from that directory to the c:\programs\browser\plugins - or whereever your plugin directory is
16:18:00 <WalterOS2> OK
16:18:48 <KenKrchnr> I just put the dll in the anonymous directory as well.
16:18:57 <Doug> Great idea.
16:19:46 <Kris> Doug: I0ve done it over, selecting the USER SPECIFIED BROWSER, and the install created the plugin directory in os2web again.
16:21:07 <Doug> ok - I will fix the installer to look for MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH, and if it finds that, to use that for OS2WEB, Mozilla and Firebird
16:25:34 <Doug> walter - did you get it to work?
16:25:36 <WalterOS2> Maybe my system is screwed up, but still nothing installed.
16:26:17 * WalterOS2 is going to logoff and reboot his system.
16:27:22 <Doug> while we are waiting on walter - we could look at the administrative stuff.
16:27:26 <Doug> if you want.
16:27:35 <Kris> Meanwhile I'll try os2web again
16:32:10 <Kris> Back on os2web now. Incidentally, this is the "OS2 webbrowser 2.02. Got it from testcase.
16:33:55 <Doug> Kris - can you see the home page at www.warpdoctor.org/home.html
16:34:16 <WalterOS2> No change.
16:34:28 <WalterOS2> One thing I should report.
16:35:29 <Kris> Walter: and that is?
16:36:10 <WalterOS2> On the packages page, WarpIn lists the OS2WEB browser which I don't have.
16:36:22 <WalterOS2> Is it possible that's confusing things?
16:36:39 <Kris> Good gracious!
16:37:05 <Doug> I don't think so. The reason it is listing OS2WEB is that it has found an entry for OS2WEB in your OS2.INI file.
16:37:14 <Doug> Let's check some things out.
16:37:23 <WalterOS2> Anyway, while I was offline, I crossed off everything, enabled the USER BROWSER, put L:\ in the path window, and installed.
16:37:37 <WalterOS2> Nothing was copied into the directory.
16:38:32 <Doug> When you run the installer you pick a path for the security configuration tool. What path is that?
16:38:51 <Doug> This is in the PACKAGES page.
16:40:13 <Kris> Doug: I'm not allowed to pick anything here. Option is grayed out.
16:40:25 <Doug> What does the option say?
16:40:47 <Doug> Bill - we are walking Walter through trying to get the plug-in installed.
16:40:57 <wdl> OK.
16:41:26 <WalterOS2> I didn't touch it. I just left it as it was.
16:41:44 <Doug> OK - does it say c:\warpdoctor ?
16:42:07 <WalterOS2> No: O:\Warpdoctor
16:42:41 <Doug> ok - does O:\WARPDOCTOR exist and does it have any files in it?
16:42:45 <WalterOS2> wdl: I'm not having the best of days. :-(
16:43:15 <WalterOS2> Yes: O: is my main eCS application drive. It is huge.
16:43:45 <Doug> ok - assuming your boot drive is C:, you should have two files in c:\os2\apps\dll
16:43:46 <WalterOS2> In fact, it is a multi-partition JFS drive.
16:43:57 <Doug> wdplugin.dll and wdicons.dll
16:44:12 <WalterOS2> Let me check.
16:45:16 <WalterOS2> Nope. Neither of them. :-(
16:46:00 <Doug> ok - lets try this: open your warpin folder - double click on the warpin icon - the one that looks like an open box
16:46:45 <Doug> You should have one or more entries titled Rexx Plug-in
16:47:01 <Doug> Right click on each of those and select De-install
16:47:34 <WalterOS2> There are 5 of them.
16:47:44 <WalterOS2> OK
16:47:46 <Doug> OK - that is about right. De-install all of them
16:48:05 <Doug> That will uninstall the entire package - and we can try installing as a "clean install"
16:48:10 <Doug> or new install.
16:48:39 <Doug> You may have to manually get rid of your O:\WARPDOCTOR directory.
16:49:13 <WalterOS2> It gave me several errors, and left three of the packages in the list with red X's in them.
16:49:36 <Doug> OK - right click on them again and select Remove from database.
16:50:28 <Doug> warpin stores the install information in a database called DATBAS_C.INI
16:50:48 <Doug> which is a standard INI type file. This removes all the entries from that file for the rexx plug-in.
16:51:29 <Doug> WHen you get done with that, try running wdRexxIn.wpi again.
16:52:05 <Doug> This time the PATH fields for each of the "packages" should not be greyed out, you should be able to specify locations for the paths
16:52:36 <Doug> And you should not see the green checks next to any packages - because WarpIn doesn't think they are intalled.
16:54:53 <WalterOS2> OK, I removed the wdRexxIN items from the Database and deleted the O:\Warpdoctor directory.
16:55:17 <WalterOS2> Let's try to install the plugin again?
16:55:21 <Doug> Yes please.
17:01:18 <WalterOS2> Success!!
17:01:42 <Doug> great- now lets see if you can get to the site. you want www.warpdoctor.org/home.html
17:02:17 <WalterOS2> Although I also have to forcefit the Netscape plugin. It wants to go into Netscape\programs
17:02:42 <WalterOS2> \plugins and in my system it's \Netscape\plugins
17:02:54 <WalterOS2> Although that's just a minor detail
17:03:41 <Doug> that is very strange. I didn't know that netscape had multiple places it could put plugins
17:04:04 <WalterOS2> heh
17:04:27 <WalterOS2> I got your home page, but just a single vertical line.
17:04:29 <Doug> Once you open www.warpdoctor.org/home.html click on the gear. You should see a "settings notebook"
17:04:42 <WalterOS2> Nope.
17:05:15 <WalterOS2> Let's break it off here.
17:05:49 <Doug> Ok - you are getting the "conflict with drRexx" problem. You can try shutting down all the other applications except Mozilla and then trying www.warpdoctor.org/home.html again
17:06:36 <WalterOS2> Shutting down GTIRC as well? I've already done that too many times.
17:06:53 <WalterOS2> I'll do that after the meeting and email you the results.
17:06:58 <Doug> ok
17:07:10 <Doug> after the meeting the best thing to do is
17:07:13 <Doug> 1) do a reboot
17:07:30 <Doug> 2) before you do anything else - try to get to www.warpdoctor.org/home.html
17:07:56 <Doug> That way you will know that you are opening the browser before you have started any potentiall conflicting applications.
17:08:12 <WalterOS2> OK, will do.
17:08:31 <WalterOS2> Good luck with your campaigning, etc.
17:08:35 <KenKrchnr> I'll leave the site redirected 'til 6PM ET, will that be long enough? After that you'll need to add to your mptn\etc\hosts file -
17:08:43 <Doug> Maybe KEN can leave the pointy thing pointing to 206.135.240.98 for awhile so that you can try it.
17:08:45 <Doug> Thanks
17:08:48 <WalterOS2> That'll will be find.
17:08:52 <KenKrchnr> 206.135.240.98 www.warpdoctor.org
17:08:56 <WalterOS2> err..fine
17:09:27 <WalterOS2> "pointy thing"
17:09:35 <Doug> tech talk
17:09:48 <WalterOS2> I'm already having enough trouble with getting my tech terms right!!
17:10:36 <WalterOS2> I'm trying to get my website to talk to the internet, and having a few problems....as always.
17:10:59 <Doug> i'm am going to go shake hands. I'll see you all next week.
17:11:09 <Doug> Walter - please email with you results
17:11:10 <Doug> bye
17:11:11 <KenKrchnr> Bye Doug
17:11:13 <WalterOS2> Would someone like to adjourn the meeting?
17:11:21 <Doug> oops move to adjourn
17:11:39 <WalterOS2> All in favour, please type Aye
17:11:43 <Doug> aye
17:11:46 <KenKrchnr> Aye
17:11:50 <wdl> aye
17:12:17 <WalterOS2> Motion is carried. Meeting is adjourned.
